Harvesting of “Fukumaru” rice bred by Ibaraki Prefecture.

The University of Tsukuba’s T-PIRC farm grew “Fukumaru,” a rice variety bred by Ibaraki Prefecture, and successfully harvested it on September 7, 2021. “Fukumaru” was cultivated by direct sowing with a drone in order to reduce labor and cost, especially in this year we used only disinfected seed without any pretreatment for further labor saving.
“Fukumaru” was born from the combination of “Fusaotome”, which has excellent high temperature resistance, and “Hitachi 20”, which has large grains, inheriting the good qualities of each. Its name comes from the fact that it cooks up fluffy, round and large. The main feature of “Fukumaru” is the “outstanding size and richness of the grains”, and the beauty of the cooked rice has been praised by top chefs. The chewy texture and rich flavor that expands as you chew are said to enhance the taste of side dishes.

“Fukumaru” harvested at the University of Tsukuba’s T-PIRC farm will be sold at Kasumi in University of Tsukuba and other locations, so please take this opportunity to purchase some.
