Graduate School Common Foundation Subject “Biodiversity and Change of Environment”

On July 11, 2022, the Graduate School Common Foundation Subject “Biodiversity and Change of Environment” was held at T-PIRC farm.
This course is one of the first Graduate School subject established in Japan offered by the University of Tsukuba to help students acquire a rich culture and sense of ethics on top of their own expertise, and to “Foster the human ability” needed to become well-balanced researchers and highly-skilled professionals. Of the four classes, two were conducted by two researchers from Tsukuba Botanical Garden, a partner organization of the University, and two were conducted at the University. On the day of the classes, the students received a lecture on crop diversity from Professor Hayashi, and then learned about the differences among winter cereals using actual ear samples of them. The students then made specimens using eight different winter cereals. Finally, they visited the crop exhibition field located on the farm and observed millets, food crops, and industrial crops, which they rarely have chance to see.
