On Friday, June 18, Sinisa BERJAN, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and his delegations visited to President Kyosuke NAGATA and Vice President for Global Affairs Caroline F. BENTON.
After the courtesy visit, the Ambassador and his delegations visited the Tsukuba-Plant Innovation Research Center, Smart and Sustainable Agriculture Research Division (T-PIRC Farm), where they observed the newly released GABA-rich tomatoes cultivar, which were developed using genome editing technology. They also tasted the fruits. The tour continued with a visit to a paddy field where dozens of rice cultivars have been planted for the purpose of preserving genetic resources, and a paddy field where a long-term continuous fertilization test has been conducted under the same management since the opening of the university.
Professor Naoya FUKUDA, Director of Smart and Sustainable Agriculture Research Division, who accompanied the tour, explained that this is the first time in Japan that the high GABA content tomato cultivar have been produced using genome editing technology at T-PIRC, and it has been approved for production in ordinary open fields as a new cultivar, which is an actual example of social implementation of research results.
It has also been uploaded to the university website.
